Mixed Metaphors: Mike van Graan’s third dramatic exercise of democratic rights is in the Artscape Arena for a limited season until 6 May. Thirty years after the youth uprisings of 1976, Mixed Metaphors raises questions about the role of young people in contemporary South Africa. Lerato Mbuli is a hot performance poet. She’s on the cutting edge of the wave of conscious poetry sweeping the country. Cindy Petersen is a young arts journalist who is also the daughter of 1976 activists. She doesn’t care much for politics. Or struggle. Thirty years after the ’76 uprisings, these two women in their early twenties meet. Book at Computicket or Artscape Dial A Seat, 421-7695.
Schools: “Nosel’Eyibethile Akakayoji”, the Xhosa Grade 12 Setwork is in the Artscape Theatre from 9 to 20 May at 10:00. The drama tells the story of Nozibele who falls pregnant by Sipho during her grade 10. Sipho denies his involvement as she had several boyfriends. This signals the end of Nozibele’s school days. A young man Zolani comes to her rescue. He finds employment for her and encourages her to complete her schooling. During her final year of studying, she returns to her first love, Sipho. On iscovering this, Zolani feels betrayed and decide to eliminate her from society. Booking forms availble from Alfred Magwaca, 410-9961 or fax 410-9980.
