Pull up your socks, says Mayor

IT is still early in her term, but it seems the new mayor of Drakenstein, Charmaine Manuel, has got the reins firmly in hand and knows what she wants.
She took officials to task at a recent meeting of the Mayoral Committee regarding an unsatisfactory report.
The report was supposed to be an update on the ward committee projects, whereby every ward received R50 000 at the end of last year to spend at their discretion.
While the report was marked for information only, the Mayor decided to go into caucus to study the report.
Back in the meeting, it was clear that there was widespread dissatisfaction among the councillors on the content of the report.
“There is some very gross misrepresentation in this report,” said Mayor Manuel.
In quite a few cases councillors disputed the facts in the report, arguing that the progress mentioned was not visible, such as the alleged upgrading of parks and the clearing of alien vegetation and dangerous trees.
It was also clear from the report that in some wards nothing had happened for the last month - or it was not reported.
The Mayor emphasised that the aim of the project was to get the community involved.
“There is a lot of enthusiasm and goodwill in the community.
“Administration has let the community down in this instance and the mayoral committee is extremely disappointed.”
The administration, by mouth of acting municipal manager Khaya Mrali, was given one month to complete the projects.
The Mayor also asked for an updated report at the next "Mayco" meeting, held last week, where a much more comprehensive and updated report was submitted. The Mayor expressed the committee’s satisfaction, but urged officials to finish projects as soon as possible, as the financial year was fast nearing its end.
