With this weapon, they gamble with our lives

With this weapon, they gamble with our lives

IT appears that a security company which picks up cash in transit, is gambling with the lives of the public.

On Saturday 3 April at 10:13 in front of the Wagenmakersplein shopping centre in Paarl (Pick ‘n Pay), I witnessed a guard of Coin Security standing by to pick up cash, but he was a sorry sight.

The guard held a rifle with a broken off butt and without a front sight. This means if any attempt to highjack this van, the public will be in danger from a firearm that is illegal.

The matter was reported to Coin Security who said they would confiscate the rifle, but two weeks later he was still carrying the same battered weapon.

Why does Coin Security gamble with our lives?

It is illegal according to the firearms act to possess and use an altered fire arm.

The question is whether the guards are poorly trained, or whether inspections of these weapons are not an important issue for the company, thus endangering private law abiding citizens.
