Backsberg red wine shines

BACKSBERG shone at the Swiss International Air Lines Wine Awards, winning the award for best value red wine with the Backsberg Pumphouse Shiraz 2003 (best wine retailing under R50).
The trophy for Best Boutique White Wine was awarded to Blue Crane for their Jagger’s Peak Chenin Blanc 2005 while Best Red was scooped by Groot Constantia’s Gouverneurs Reserve 2003
Seven Oak scooped the special trophy for “The Best Kept Secret” with their 6+1 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2004.
Other local wines which garnered gold were Boland Reserve No 1 Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 and Shiraz Reserve No 1 2002, Glen Carlou 2005 Chardonnay, Lynx 2004 Shiraz and 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Perdeberg 2005 Chenin Reserve.
Judged on international standards, the Swiss International Air Lines Wine Awards is a unique competition focusing on exposing South African wines and winemakers to major local and international retail chains, with food and wine pairing an important component of the judging criteria.
The export relevance of the competition is boosted by the presence of wine buyers from international retail chains and Swiss International Air Lines for consideration on their flights.
Overall 27 Gold and 53 Silver medals were awarded to the entrants. Wines were marked on the IWC scale (also used in Australia and New Zealand), thereby wines awarded a Seal of Approval at this competition could be seen as the equivalent of a Bronze in other South African competitions.
