Council waives fee for erven

Council waives fee for erven

2006-05-11

THE Drakenstein Council has decided to waive availability fees in respect of vacant erven in low cost housing developments for the current financial year.

This means that people will not have to pay for services until they are able to occupy the houses in new housing schemes.

The decision will benefit beneficiaries in Project 2 in Mbekweni, where future home owners have been waiting for homes since 1998, as well as all other low cost housing developments in Drakenstein.

Furthermore, they have asked that the fees not be levied in future financial years.

The cost thereof (about R900 000) will be financed from savings on working capital.

Currently there are about 2370 ervens in Drakenstein earmarked for low cost housing projects.

By waiving the availibility charges, council will forfeit income of approximately R1,3 million for the current financial year and R1,4 million for the 2006/07 financial year.

The Council has also decided that all the debt of indigent consumers as at 31 March 2005 be written off. This is on condition that these persons had registered as indigent before 31 March 2006.
