ATM thieves hit

ATM thieves hit

2006-05-11

A PAARL woman was cheated out of R5000 by ATM swindlers who presumably sabotaged the machine.

Theresa Boshoff went to draw money at the Nedbank ATM on Saturday morning in Breda Street near Lady Grey.

There was a man in front of her who told her that there seemed to be a problem with the machine. She said she would try her card.

After Theresa had entered her pin number it seemed as if the card had got stuck and the man leaned over and pressed a button. Still nothing happened.

Another man came to her assistance and he said that he worked for Nedbank’s lost card division and would try and sort out the situation.
Still her card remained stuck in the machine.

At this stage, Theresa said, she was so confused by what was happening, and the men were so helpful, that she was not suspicious.

The man who claimed to be a Nedbank employee gave her a telephone number and said that he would sort the situation out by having her card cancelled and he would contact her on Monday.

Theresa left, trusting the ‘Nedbank employee’ to resolve the matter.
When she told her husband about what happened, he became suspicious, and phoned the toll-free number for lost cards. He realised that the card had not been cancelled and money had been withdrawn from Theresa’s account.

On Monday morning she was shocked to learn that R2000 had been withdrawn from her account, and her card had been used at the Paarl Mall for debit transactions of R3000.

A spokesperson for the bank said that the case is currently under investigation.

She has warned the public never to use the assistance of anybody when using an ATM, except certified bank personnel.

She also warned that only ATMs adjacent to banks have security cameras, and the one that Theresa used was not at a bank.

The public must therefore also only use ATMs where they feel secure.
