Unruly behaviour spoils local clash
2006-05-11
THE local derby between Vineyards and Young Standards lived up to what was expected when these two teams met at the Dal Josphat Stadium on Saturday.
Although the game was hard and neither team gave an inch, it failed as a rugby spectacle however, due to dirty play and foul language. Both teams received two yellow cards and a Young Standards player was also given a red card after the final whistle for an incident while the players were shaking hands.
The fact that the referee gave the final warning 15 minutes into the game, declaring that he would call it a day if there was one more punch-up, testifies to the testosterone driven aggression that spoiled the game.
With all these off-the-ball incidents taking place, it is no wonder there wasn’t any time for scoring tries.
Vineyards went in to the half-time break leading 6-3 after flyhalf Anton Snyman succeeded with two long range penalty kicks.
Vineyards, with their captain Thaamir Moerat (flank) being sin-binned for the first ten minutes of the second half, did well to defend their lead with 14 men and even added another three pointer thanks to the boot of fullback John Koopman.
Continuous pressure by Vineyards led to another penalty with seven minutes remaining, which was slotted by Koopman thus giving Vineyards a 12-3 victory.
For Vineyards Mathew de Beer (flank), Jody Carolissen (centre) and Anwar Shuhail Moerat (wing) played their hearts out.
Young Standards’ penalty goal came compliments of the kicking boot of reserve flyhalf Rico Davey.
Young Standards II won 18-5 whilst the third teams had to settle for a pointless draw.
