Nouvelle could be 'sister' to Pinotage
2005-04-14
THE Boland Kelder introduced the first bottled wine of the new variety Nouvelle recently, and it is now available in the market. Nouvelle possesses a lot of the green tropical and grassy aromas that white wine lovers prefer.
Prof Chris Orffer of the University of Stellenbosch created the variety by crossing Sémillon and SA Riesling (also known as Crouchen Blanc) years ago, but recently it became a new millennium phenomenon when Boland Kelder, together with their producing shareholders, the Geldenhuys brothers from Klipvlei, decided to plant Nouvelle commercially.
The cultivar first captured Boland Kelder Cellarmaster’s attention at a clone tasting for its potential for blending in white wines. The decision was justified by firm evidence of its quality potential, as two previous vintages won awards at the SA Young Wine Show. In 2002 it was judged best in its class, while the 2004 Boland Nouvelle won the championship trophy as the Best Other White Cultivar.
Although Boland Kelder’s winemakers are not yet ready to proclaim that the variety will become as famous as its red SA counterpart, Pinotage, industry watchers are of the opinion that it may be the right variety at the right time.
