FIFTEEN overjoyed families received the keys to their newly built homes in Housing Scheme 51 (White City) and Housing Scheme 49 (Project 2) in Mbekweni on Tuesday.

The White City Project consists of 385 affordable housing units.

The project is part of national government hostel upgrading and redevelopment programme, comprising the conversion of existing hostels into approximately 122 subdivided units and the construction of approximately 263 semi-detached topstructures on separate sites.

It is projected that the construction will be completed in May next year if everything runs smoothly.

Project 2 will consist of 791 housing units of which 766 have been reapproved by the Western Cape Housing Development Board.

Tenders for the construction of 120 houses have been called for by tenderers who specialised in PHP housing projects to fast track the project.

Mayor Charmaine Manuel told the beneficiaries that a house only becomes a home when people move in: “That is what is happening today: living human beings are going to decorate the houses, to move their things in. I want to urge you to make your home your castle, your security and comfort.

“A home is a place to raise children, where you can truly live the life God had intended for you.”
