Paarl play like lost boys on Mother's Day
2006-05-18
THE first team of Paarl Soccer Club had one of its poorest weekends in terms of results over the Mother’s Day weekend.
On Saturday Paarl faced XI Attackers from Khayamandi in Stellenbosch, at the Boy Louw fields.
This Castle League play-off fixture started on a disastrous note for the home side when captain Johan Adams made a blunder and allowed the striker to pounce on the loose ball, scoring the visitor’s first goal in only the fifth minute.
Paarl responded with the equaliser minutes later with Deon Francke the scorer. The defensive unit of Paarl had an unfortunate day and indecision by goalkeeper, Shamir Davids, led to two further goals for the visitors making the half-time score 3-1 in the visitors' favour.
After some stern word during the half-time break, the home side played with more purpose and captain, Johan Adams, led the charge by scoring two goals in the second half.
Unfortunately their defensive woes continued when Paarl pushed more players into attacking positions leaving them vulnerable at the back. This led to two more goals for the visitors with the match resulting in a 5-3 defeat for Paarl.
Paarl II won their match on default when the second team of Athletico FC did not pitch for their scheduled match.
Sunday Paarl travelled to Worcester to face View of Hope.
Paarl’s line-up had to reshuffle due to injuries to several players. The visitors started off on a brisk note, but a fumble in the goal-mouth from a free-kick by stand-in goalkeeper Lindsay van der Berg, led to a goal for View of Hope.
The defence however then settled and no further opportunities were allowed for the home team.
The Paarl players managed to create ample opportunities, but could not convert any into goals.
The three front-line players, Ozane Davids, Deon Francke and Johan Adams, had many opportunities to seal the game for the visitors, but did not have luck on their side.
This coming Saturday Paarl will be up against Glen Eagles of Stellenbosch at 13:30 and on Sunday Paarl face Worcester Spurs at the Boy Louw fields at 15:30.
