WINE lovers can savour South Africa’s top wines during June: the trophy winners and gold and silver medallists of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2006 (formerly the Fairbairn Capital Trophy Wine Show) will be on show at a public tasting in Cape Town immediately after the results are announced on Friday, 9 June.
The judging of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show took place at Grande Roche in Paarl from 8 to 11 May.
This is the fifth year of South Africa’s Trophy Wine Show, an event widely regarded as the country’s most credible wine competition.
Fairbairn Capital, the wealth management division of Old Mutual, has sponsored the show since its inception and Old Mutual has extended its sponsorship agreement of the Show.
While Old Mutual becomes the headline sponsor of the Show, the premier award of the show is the Fairbairn Capital Trophy for the Most Successful Winery.
The tasting panel, chaired by Michael Fridjhon, comprised a line-up of wine authorities including Vanya Cullen (senior Australian Show Judge and wine proprietor), Dr Paul Pontallier (Directeur of Château Margaux, France), Michael Schuster (UK wine writer and wine educator) and international wine buyer Richard Kelley MW.
South African judges completing the panel were Carrie Adams (partner and wine buyer at Norman Goodfellows), Angela Lloyd (wine judge and wine writer), Marc Kent (winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof), Cathy van Zyl MW (wine writer and wine judge) and Chris Williams (winemaker at Meerlust).
International panellists and transparently rigorous judging procedures have led premium wineries to hail the show as the industry’s benchmark event; the popularity of the tastings is testimony to the show’s benefit to South African wine lovers.
The venue is the Grand Ballroom, Arabella Sheraton Grand Hotel from 17:00 to 20:00.‘Early bird’ tickets bought by the end of May will cost R75 each and tickets sold thereafter and at the door (subject to availability) at R90 per person.
