2006-05-18
THE Fairview Wine Estate outclassed other South African wine producers when it walked off with a total of 12 medals at the prestigious 2006 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles awards.
Fairview’s medal tally included two Great Gold Medals, four Gold Medals and six Silver Medals, which made it the most prolific medal winner amongst the 28 South African estates entered in the competition.
The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, which was held in Lisbon at the end of April, is one of the most prominent international wine and spirits competitions and is aimed at recognising wines of good quality from around the globe and showcasing the latest trends in vintages, vine varieties and wine-producing countries.
Over 5000 samples were tasted by panels compiled from 200 international wine professionals from 43 different countries.
The Fairview La Beryl Blanc 2005 and Fairview Viognier 2005 received two of only 47 Great Gold Medals awarded at this year’s competition.
These two wines produced at Fairview Wine Estate outside Paarl were also the only Great Gold Medal recipients from South Africa, which entered a total of 152 wines to be judged.
Great Gold Medals are awarded to wines that score 96 or more points. Less than 1% of all wines sampled during the competition receive this coveted accolade. Only 1543 medals were awarded at this year’s competition.
Golds were scored by the Fairview Pinotage 2004, Fairview Solitude Shiraz 2003, Goat Roti 2004 and Spice Route Pinotage 2005. The silver medal recipients from Fairview were Fairview The Beacon Shiraz 2004, Fairview Jakkalsfontein Shiraz 2004, Fairview Pinotage Viognier 2004, Fairview Shiraz 2004, Goats do Roam in Villages 2004 and Spice Route Flagship Syrah 2003.
According to owner Charles Back, he is absolutely delighted with his wines’ performance at this internationally renowned competition.
“My faith in varieties such as Viognier, Shiraz and Pinotage has been rewarded."
