This building project will be a disaster

A TOWN planning disaster can happen anywhere - all it takes is a greedy developer and a desperate municipality.
I am writing this letter with pain in my heart. Once again the Paarl Municipality is heading for a town planning disaster with very little if any consideration for the residents of the area, that being Malherbe, Thom and Du Toit Streets.
This unique area which is made up of some very old, but well maintained houses is heading for disaster!
The Municipality is in the process of passing the plans for a five-storey block of flats slap bang in the middle of a single storey area. Only appeals to the premier can still stop this project.
Their reasoning is that there are already flats in the area so why not carry on building more? This concrete monster will hang over us forever!
The property in question is in my opinion not big enough to build such a large structure. The roads in this area are narrow, pavements virtually non existent, these roads are already being used as access roads with quite a volume of traffic and with the development in Pastorie Avenue also going ahead our narrow roads will become even busier.
Now they want to bring in an extra 60 plus people into the area with another 50 plus cars.
The residents of this area are already rolling over and giving up, as they feel that their objections are falling on deaf ears.
All the objections that we have put forward have been reasonable and we have seen what negative impact such a development could have on the area.
I want to know from the municipality, why they send out notifications of possible rezoning, when they will just carry on regardless?
If such a disaster can happen here it can happen anywhere in Paarl. Think about it, look at a five-storey block of flats and see how you would feel if that building was right on your doorstep looking over you, blocking out sunlight for most of the day, depriving you of privacy, for which one pays dearly nowadays, with cars coming in and out of the building any time of the day and night.
