Jobs for pals rule at the Municipality
2006-05-18
I REFER to the letter of “Jobless and dejected” in the Paarl Post of 4 May. According to my little knowledge of the Act, municipal vacancies, irrespective if whether they are political appointments, must be advertised at least in a local newspaper.
I can’t recall that the vacancies in the office of the Speaker were advertised in any local paper especially the Paarl Post.
The writer conclude his letter with: “I can’t help but wonder if they have already decided who will get the jobs and whether the advertisement (Cape Argus) was just a little window dressing?”
Don’t wonder my friend. Two people were appointed. The one a former mayoral committee member of the Drakenstein Municipal Council and the other a “prominent” member of the ANC Youth League (I hope they met the requirements and criteria set for the positions). Both are loyal supporters of a certain influential grouping in the Western Cape ANC.
This is certainly a matter of jobs for pals and “Ja boeties”. I have it on good authority that the other party in die ANC alliance has similar moves afoot to bring in their people for staff vacancies not yet advertised.
It seems jobs at municipalities are only for loyalists, friends and families of ruling parties in the new South Africa. The voters were forgotten at 19:00 on 1 March (Election Day).
We the voters will cry hell and high water but our so-called representatives will do their own thing and satisfy their own greed and that of their blind followers.
The taxpayers and ratepayers will just have to cough up for the big salaries and benefits of the Fat Cats on the local gravy train.
