Home-brewed music back in Mbekweni
2006-05-25
MBEKWENI Black Bafanas - a local group of musicians - are back in their town to celebrate traditional music on Saturday.
While their popularity has been growing in the tourism industry outside their hometown, Mbekweni Black Bafanas still takes time off to involve itself in projects that benefit education and training.
This time around the group returns to their home of Mbekweni to wow the local audience in a festival to be held at the Mbekweni Community Hall on Saturday from 11:00.
The group is known for its achievements, including performing in a charity event that was honoured by the Duke of Wellington and later surprised Prince Albert of Monaco in his visit to South Africa last year by singing the Monaco National Anthem in French.
Mbekweni Black Bafanas were recently crowned champions of Western Cape in the Isicathamiya category in an event organised by the Provincial Traditional Music Association, Western Cape.
This festival is organised to promote the preservation of traditional music.
In a campaign that is affectionately known as “Khanibuyelekhaya Icamagu livumile” (Homecoming), traditional groups from Cape Town will join locals and Black Bafanas in showcasing what is known as Home Brewed Products.
There will also be traditional food on sale at the event.
Dignitaries from Drakenstein Municipality, Cape Winelands, Wellington Tourism and Western Cape Cultural Tourism have been invited.
The group urges locals to attend in great numbers. Tickets at R10 (children R5) are available from Mbekweni Black Bafanas. Contact PC Kutuka at 083-696-1747.
