Cellar to Cellar marathon now even bigger
2005-04-14
THIS year’s Swartland Winery Cellar to Cellar Marathon taking place on Saturday will be bigger and better than in previous years.
Over 2000 runners entered this Comrades Qualifier in 2004 and more entries are expected this year.
With this in mind the organisers have moved the event to a bigger area allowing for more entertainment and carnival festivities plus more space for the runners.
Entry forms are in Totalsports stores, major sports stores and available from the Winery since Monday or can be downloaded from www. enteronline.co.za or www.swwines.co.za
The undulating course through the Swartland vineyards is a challenge for the runners, but one that can stand them in good stead for the Comrades and enjoys high participation from top runners. Starting and ending at the sportsfield of Swartland High School, the event now has greater capacity for the crowds who flocked to the event last year.
Held under the auspices of SA Athletics and Boland Athletics the marathon starts at 07:00 and allows you to run through private vineyards and the very special scenery that is the Swartland.
The event also comprises a halfmarathon from 08:00 and for the fun runners and walkers there’s a 10km route starting at 08:15.
From 08:30 take on the 5km run or walk it for easy exercise.
Entry fees for licensed runners are R40 marathon, R30 halfmarathon and R15 for the 10km whilst the 5km costs R10. A temporary licence will cost you an additional R15.
The numbers can be collected from 09:00 to 16:30 from Totalsports Somerset Mall, Tyger Valley, Paarl and Claremont or from the Swartland Winery.
With top class entertainment in a large marquee and wine tasting, food stalls and a host of other attractions organisers are confident that visitors and entrants will party until late.
The programme for the day will feature top singers Christo and Cobus, the D’Vine duo, Stephne Smit, Nic Stevens and a host of other well-known artists.
