Last minute penalty sinks Vineyards
2006-05-25
AN injury plagued first team of Vineyards Rugby Club took the field on Saturday with high spirits showing that the club has sufficient depth.
A penalty in the dying seconds of the game, however, sinked Vineyards as the visiting team of Richmond Rangers pulled off a 10-9 win at the Faure Street Stadium.
Pongas Koopman scored all the points for the home team after succeeding with three penalties.
From the get go the game was hard fought amongst the forwards.
The fatal penalty kick was made easier for Richmond after the referee awarded it 10 metres closer, compliments of some back chatting by Vineyards players.
The Paarl team can only blame themselves for the defeat even though they played without six of their regular first team players.
It was the second team who impressed though.
Vineyards II won their game 17-0, with tries scored by Michael Albertyn (prop), Bienjamien Nackerdien (flank) and Andrew Victor (flyhalf).
Victor added the extra two points. Shukri Moerat was named man of the match for his telling line breaks which led to two of the tries.
Vineyards I and II are currently positioned third on their respective logs.
On Saturday Vineyards play against the logleaders Kylmore in an away match. Four injured players will make a welcome return.
