Soccer star's help inspires local club

THE interest of a South African playing soccer star overseas has spurred on the performance of a local Paarl club.

Double V United of Amstelhof recently achieved some financial aid from a group of soccer enthusiasts from the Netherlands.

The Dutch group is also a ferocious supporter of the English Premier League side Charlton Athletic, who currently has South African striker Shaun Bartlett playing for them.

After some enquiries Bartlett agreed to get involved with Double V United, with the possibility of supporting the Paarl club financially as well as helping talented players to play abroad.

Two more Cameronians currently play for Double V honing their skills before setting off for England.

As a sign of his commitment Bartlett sent the club an autographed Charlton Athletic jersey.

Double V’s plan to “export” talent has been given a boost by the experience of their coach, Justin Tsala Tsala. The Cameronian is a former European League player and knowing the set-up overseas will help him ready local players to perform abroad.

Spurred on by this newfound interest, Double V United is committed to make their mark in the coming Castle League.

The club had mixed success in their Castle League play-off matches this past weekend securing a win and drawing.

On Saturday Double V took on Vivendi Strikers beating them 3-2.
Vivendi took the lead at half time 1-0 after Mervin Gordon blast the ball past goalkeeper Bevan Christiaan.

Double V soon took the lead after Belomo Dodson (striker) and Jean Bekong (midfielder) found the back of the goal.

Vivendi tried their utmost to fight back, but were further discouraged when Dodson scored again.

In the dying minutes Vivendi was awarded a penalty kick. Giving Warren Groenewaldt the chance to make the score 3-2.
Sunday saw Double V draw 4-4 against SAPS Breedevalley of Worcester at the Boy Louw Grounds.

Double V took the lead within the first five minutes when Breslin Moses (left wing) scored a brilliant goal. Two more goals by debutant striker Elton “Hot” Groenewald and Jean Bekong made the halftime score 3-0.

The visitors came back with a vengeance in the second half. T Bongani and Ndu Maqanda (two) both guided the ball to the back of the net to make the score 4-3 in favour of Double V after Moses scored his second goal.

After a somewhat controversial decision the visitors had the chance to line up for a penalty kick at goal. Maqanda made no mistake and in doing so snatched a victory from the Paarl team.

Double V play Eleven Ideas at 16:00 on Saturday followed by a match against Mountain Sweepers of Zwellentemba at 15:30 on
Sunday. Both games are away.
