More success for Thomas and team CSC/CVT
2006-06-01
THE cycling team of CSC/CVT won the first race in the Cape Winter League on Sunday.
The dynamic sprinting duo - comprising of CSC/CVT captain Garth Thomas and Abdelbasset Hannachi - lead the team to victory, even though bad luck had struck both riders during the four-lap circuit event held near Fisantekraal.
Thomas, a former rider of Paarl cycling club, Rhadsport, and Hannachi punctured during the second and third laps respectively, but excellent teamwork and strong riding by Chris Willemse Jnr, Dean Hopf and Travys Wilkins helped the riders rejoin the bunch and, with less than 3km to go, Hannachi opened up the gap for Thomas to gain a convincing win.
Thomas, Hannachi, Wilkins and Willemse Jnr hope to maintain their winning form when they compete in Germany from 4 to 25 June as a guest of bicycle sponsor, Marcello.
The riders will participate in six events in Germany and plans are afoot to include two cycling events in Holland in their itinerary, according to Chris Willemse Senior.
The invitation to race in Germany follows Team CSC/CVT’s impressive performances over the past few months.
The team won the Western Province Track and Road Championships, won the most medals in the Elite division at the SA Track Championships and has also won a number of local races.
As the team will be competing overseas during June, it will lose out on participating in the SA Championships.
“Since our trip to Germany coincides with the SA Championships in Port Elizabeth our sole medal hopes will be pinned on Dean Hopf for a win in the u.23 category.”
Team CSC/CVT will return to Cape Town on 26 June in time to compete against the country’s top riders in the Sandton Criterium, which will be held on Saturday 1 July, followed by the Knysna Cycling Festival event the Sunday.
CSV/CVT left for Germany yesterday.
