A taste of time at dinner

2006-06-08

THREE South African greats will come together on Saturday 24 June when the internationally renowned Günter Brözel, current award-winning cellarmaster at Nederburg, Razvan Macici and wine and food pairing specialist, Katinka van Niekerk present an exclusive five-course dinner in Nederburg’s historic manor house.

The wine and food evening composed by the three to spotlight three decades of selected red and dessert wines produced in the cellars at Nederburg, will be led by Van Niekerk, the doyenne of wine and food matching in South Africa.

Now contracted to Nederburg, she has advised many of the country’s leading chefs and worked extensively abroad.

She will highlight how the five taste sensations - sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami - impact on the matching of food with wine.

Internationally celebrated Brözel, winemaker at Nederburg from 1956 to 1989, will tell the story of his now legendary dessert wine Edelkeur and how it came into being.

He will present a tasting of this and other noble late harvest dessert wines, as well as the prized 1964 Nederburg Port, now totally out of circulation.

Macici, who has also amassed a treasure trove of international accolades, will showcase current vintage, as well as rare wines made for exclusive sale on the Nederburg Auction.

Nederburg spokesperson, Sunette Rust, the organiser of the evening, says the number of people who can be accommodated is strictly limited and that early booking is advisable. She can be contacted on 862-3104 or nedwines@distell.co.za for reservations.
