Council hosts youth programme
2006-06-08
THE Drakenstein Council will host a programme celebrating the 30th anniversary of the June 16th youth uprisings.
This decision was taken against the backdrop that:
* The circumstances that lead to the Soweto Uprisings must never be repeated;
* The youth of today seem to not be aware of the sacrifices and challenges faced by youth during the 70’s and 80’s; and
* The youth of today also face different challenges - drug abuse, gangsterism, unemployment, poverty and HIV/Aids.
The idea of this programme is to take stock of the challenges faced then and now and see what similarities exist and what joint programmes one can embark on as a collective to face the challenges head-on.
A lively programme is planned for the morning of Friday 16 June at the Paarl Town Hall, Main Street, where everyone is invited to participate in interfaith service, drama, speakers, cultural events, music and refreshments.
Buses will be available to transport youths from various areas in Drakenstein to and from the Paarl Town Hall.
The Executive Mayor, Charmaine Manuel, extended an open invitation to the youth and all other sectors of the community to join and enjoy the festivities.
