Paarl's soccer woes continue
2006-06-08
THE woes of the Paarl Soccer Club continued on Saturday when they lost their away match against Jamestown 5-1.
The visitors competed throughout, but the big difference was that the homeside converted the opportunities that came their way into goals. In the first half, Jamestown got a free kick on the edge of the Paarl 18-yard box.
An unfortunate deflection wrong-footed goalkeeper Shamir Davids for the first goal of the match. The Stellenbosch team capitalised on two more opportunities after the Paarl midfield unnecessary gave away possession.
Jamestown thus lead 3-0 at half time.
After some stern words during the break, the Paarl side were more adventurous and dominated in both the territory and possession.
This change in gameplan however left the visitors’ defences bare and this allowed Jamestown to convert two more chances into goals. The constant pressure by the Paarl attack eventually allowed for a consolation goal scored by striker Ozane Davids.
Sunday brought a change of luck for Paarl as they beat Young Stars of Khayamandi 3-1 at the Boy Louw grounds.
Paarl was intent on turning their fortunes around and started the game aggressively which hampered the visitors from playing their normally free-flowing game.
The home side scored the first goal of the match through captain Johan Adams after a brilliant cross-kick from the right of the field by man of the match, Rieduwaan Behardien.
Paarl dominated the rest of the first half without scoring again.
The second half was a more purpose driven affair as the Paarl side dominated the midfield through tough tackling and good skills by Wade Anderson, Adams and Anthony Chapman.
After the introduction of Igshaan Dennis on the left-half, Leroy Prins scored to put Paarl in the lead.
Two minutes later Chapman found the back of the net by means of a brilliant strike from outside the 18-yard box to clinch the game.
Paarl had to play the last quarter of the match with 10 men after Wade Anderson was dismissed for his second bookable offence.
The executive committe of the Paarl Soccer Club invites all soccer enthusiasts to watch the opening matches of the Soccer World Cup at the club house at the Boy Louw fields tomorrow at 18:00. Food and beverages will be on sale and all business people are invited for a sundowner at the same time.
