BOLAND youth was well represented as The Duke of Edinbuegh’s Award’s 50th anniversary celebrated at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Cape Town recently.

It was hosted by Paul Boateng, the British High Commissioner to South Africa.

Young people from Drakenstein Prison, Bridge House School and Noorder Paarl Secondary mingled with guests that included the MEC for Education (WC), Cameron Dugmore, former Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Cheryl Gillwald, and international representatives of the International Award Association.

Emma Heistein, a Gold Award participant from Bridge House School and Randall Kholl, a Gold Award participant from Drakenstein Correctional Centre, shared their views.

Said Emma, “I have come away with greater understanding of people from diverse groups and situations in life. “I have learnt to look at things from different perspectives, with acceptance and much more appreciation.”

Randall agreed: “I have learnt an unbelievable amount about myself and where and what I would like to achieve in life. I have seen and learnt a great deal of what life is all about.”

Musical items were presented by Bridge House School Award participants and the Drakenstein Correctional Centre adult choir.

Paul Boateng, The British High Commissioner to South Africa said, “I have seen for myself at first hand The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment Trust’s work here in South Africa.

“The enthusiasm of the Correctional Centre management and the staff and offenders alike was both moving and inspirational.”
