Trophy for Chamonix

Trophy for Chamonix

2006-06-15

JUNE was an auspicious month for Chamonix Winery in Franschhoek with the announcement of a Trophy for its Bordeaux blend, Troika 2003, in the Best Red Blends (Bordeaux Style) category of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2006.

Winemaker Gottfried Mocke is thrilled with the award - and even more thrilled at getting it a week before his 30th birthday!

“It has taken a few vintages for me to get the Troika right - but with this wine, we’re getting there,” he says. “And the 2004 will be even closer to my eventual vision!”

Another trophy winner from Franschhoek is the Landau du Val Semillon 2004, which won the trophy for best semillon.

Vergelegen was adjudged the most successful producer at the show, edging out close contender Cape Point Vineyards.

The Trophy for the Discovery of the Show (Best Value) went to Rustenberg’s Brampton Cabernet Sauvignon 2004.

Local gold medal winners were GlenWood Vigneron’s Selection Chardonnay 2005, Napier Red Medallion 2000 and Glen Carlou Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2005.

There were 974 entries at this year’s competition, of which 961 were judged (after disqualifications and late withdrawals).

This is slightly down on last year’s 995, but well up on the 951 in 2004 and the 916 in 2003.
