Paarl girl packs a punch

A TALENTED karateka of Paarl has surprised both friend and foe at a recent World Karate Championship.
Lauren Esterhuyse (pic) of the Boland Goju Ryu Karate Club won a gold and bronze medal at the Miyagi Chojun Martial Arts Festival in Niagara Falls, Canada.
Esterhuyse and fellow Paarlite Philip Jordaan were part of the 30 strong South African team who competed at the World Championship that formed part of the festival.
A total of 25 countries competed with more than 500 fighters lining up on the mats.
The 15-year-old Lauren competed in the u.17 advanced category where she received gold in the kata (forms) discipline and bronze in the Iri Kumi (fighting) discipline.
Lauren earned her place in the SA team after being crowned SA Junior Champion in both 2004 and 2005.
Jordaan, who also competed in the u.17 advanced category, won bronze in kata discipline. He is a pupil of Paarl Gymnasium High School.
Lauren has highlighted her talent as a diverse sportswoman by being selected for the Boland u.19 girls’ cricket team and also plays for the u.19 girls’ hockey team of her school, Bridge House, which tours to Argentina shortly.
