Endless action at MTB event

THE Delvera Farm near Stellenbosch was the hub of excitement this past weekend when 227 mountain-bike enthusiasts and leisure cyclists gathered to participate in the second annual Dirtopia Nine-to-Five Mountain Bike Team Relay.

The goal of the relay was to finish as many 7km laps as possible in an 8-hour time period.

Although entrants had an option of competing either in teams of two or four, the event also attracted 71 solo entrants.

The route was easy enough for riders across all levels, but heavy rains prior to the event ensured a fairly technical and muddy route.

Fast laps ensured lots of activity in the transition area. It wasn’t necessary for team members to ride in sequence and one team member could do as many consecutive laps as they liked as long as there wasn’t more than a four lap difference between the rider with the most laps and the rider with the least number of laps at the end of the event.

Ellane van Wyk was the top solo rider in the women’s category on the day and managed to complete 16 laps.

Leanne Brown Waterson came in second with 13 laps followed by Karen du Toit with 11 laps.

The top three men in the solo category all managed to complete 19 laps, but it was Heimer Anderson that obtained a first place in this category by finishing two minutes and 30 seconds ahead of Gerhard Dirks, while Petrus Malherbe came in third.

Team Recycles took honours in the Open Fours men’s category by completing 20 laps followed by Nu-Vision Multi-Media in second and Helderberg Cycle World in third spot.

Other first place positions went to Williams VNT in the Mixed Fours category, Maverick Speedfreaks in the Junior Fours category, Maverick Cycles A in the Open Duo Men’s category, Team Falke/Masons in the Mixed Duo category and Team Gecko Cycles in the Junior Duo Category.
