Tik is now the enemy

Tik is now the enemy

2006-06-22

TIK is the new enemy of South Africa, Finance minister Trevor Manuel told Paarlites during Youth Day celebrations on Friday.

Manuel said that just as the ugliness of Apartheid was the enemy of 1976, the big enemy today is drugs, Tik and Hiv/Aids.

He was the main speaker at the Youth Day festivities in the Paarl Town Hall.

He spoke to a packed hall, filled to capacity with youths from all over Drakenstein.

“You are Africans in Africa. We are Africans together. We must return to the spirit of Vukuzenzele (working together) of 1976.”

Mayor Charmaine Manuel joined him in urging the youth to reflect on the past.

Speaking on the events 30 years ago on 16 June 1976, she said many young people had been forced to give up on their hopes and dreams.

“Many of them paid the ultimate price - they gave up their lives. The legacy they left is our freedom today.

“Today you have the opportunity to fullfil your dreams. That is the debt we owe he youth of the past.

“Take the baton up and go forward as a united community - free, democratic, non-sexist and non-racial.”
