Paarl has a dog problem
2006-06-22
I READ with interest the problem the Swartz family had with neighbourhood dogs. In 2004 I had a similar experience, and also in Noorder Paarl.
I was walking my two maltese (on a lead). The one was an elderly 15-year-old and walked slowly and loved to smell around.
Walking past this one particular house, I saw a schoolchild waiting and this woman showing me to move on. I didn’t know what her problem was.
I was just past that house and the elderly dog was busy sniffing, when she opened the garage door and this Jack Russell type of dog came charging at my elderly dog and attacked her.
I went to the woman and said in Afrikaans “Maar Mevrou. My hond het mos nou seergekry.!”
She answered, “Ek kon nie langer wag nie, my kinders moet by die skool kom!”
How’s that for attitude!! (Watch out world, here comes my dog!)
Dogs should be put out the way when driving, and kept out of the public’s way especially if you know they are on the aggressive side.
I was also not asked if we were all right or given an apology by her.
However, after a small claims court letter, the husband came to enquire about the whole thing.
I then told him what had happened and we came to an agreement to drop everything and he apologised. However, to date she has never apologised.
The Municipality should realise that the Paarl community is crying out “We have a dog problem! Please help!”
