Media Centre launch
2006-06-22
A YOUTH Focal Unit and Media Centre was launched the day before Youth Day by the Paarl District Office of the Department of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation (Western Cape).
The centre will give access to computers, internet services and faxes as well as skills training in different programmes.
The head of the office, Garth Morkel, invited learners to make use of the resources at the centre, made available by Social Services at its Paarl office.
Morkel in his address said that "thirty years after the riots of 1976, our youth is still restricted and we must make self-reliance possible. This media centre is about access to opportunities.”
According to Morkel the department has invested an amount of R1,2 million to equip the youth with skills and skills development.
Social Services plans to extend services at the centre to a six day basis.
The co-ordinator of the project is Gerdo Otto, while Dora Lucas is acting as facilitator.
At this point no accreditation will be given for programmes taken.
For further information on the centre and training given, contact Vuyiswa Dodo or Gerdo Otto on 871-1682.
