SOME 300 young musicians will be converging on Cape Town in July for the annual Sasol South African National Youth Orchestra course.
Flautist Inge Pietersen from Paarl and violist Petrus Coetzee from Wellington, as well as local conductor Milton Pietersen, are included in the workshop and following concerts.
The course starting on Tuesday, is held in conjunction with the University of Cape Town.
It culminates in a feast of concerts by musicians aged be- tween 13 and 25, honed by expert teachers and conductors in four orchestras during the two-week course.
Under the direction of the South African-born international conductor Conrad van Alphen, the Sasol South African National Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform two concerts.
Works on the programme include one specially commissioned by a German broadcaster, by Cape Town composer Hans Huyssen. Proteus Variations, Huyssens’ musical representation of South Africa’s national flower, will be followed by the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto no 1 with the outstanding young cellist Leana Alkema.
The final work on the programme will be the Symphony no 5 by Beethoven.
Concerts by the Sasol South African National Youth Wind Ensemble will be conducted by Laszlo Marosi, the internationally recognised Hungarian wind instrument specialist.
This ensemble’s concert comprises Festivo by Gregson, Gallimaufry by Woolfenden, Sun Paints Rainbows on the West Waves by Bedford and Pictures of South Africa, a suite by Frigyes Hidas, which will have its world première.
The concerts will take place on 13 and 14 July, at 18:00 and 20:00, at the Joseph Stone Eoan Cultural Centre in Athlone (free entrance), at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow (R40) and St George’s Cathedral.
