Two die in blaze
2006-07-06
TWO Mbekweni men burnt to death in the early hours of Sunday morning, after apparently cooking food on an open flame.
The incident occurred in Pinzi Street, Phola Park, when a section of an informal house caught fire.
Mbulelo Gana (46) and Alex Vumazonke (42) shared a house with Gana’s brother, Van Zyl Gika, his wife Funeka and their daughter Lusanda.
Gika awoke to the screams of the men, who were trapped by the flames, and he and his family had to evacuate the house to save themselves.
Gana and Vumazonke both died in the fire, and the house and its belongings destroyed.
The fire spread to a neighbouring house, which was also razed to the ground.
Neighbour Phakamile Qangule, who was alone at the time, managed to escape the flames, but all his possessions were destroyed in the blaze.
