WHO said paintings should be hanging on the wall and not be carried around town?
And what better artwork to get your hands on than a Solomon Siko, a Selwyn Pekeur, a Frank Ross or a George Meyer?
Work from the brush of these four artists from Paarl, Mbekweni and Wellington, have adorned glossy shopping bags for Woolworths since 2001.
Selected from Selwyn’s easle was 'Cape Dance' Then came Solomon’s ‘Playing with nature’ in 2002, followed last year by a landscape by Frank, which was also used on the cover on the annual financial report.
From this month George’s ‘Waiting for his master’ will be seen in all the stores.
According to George, artists are contacted each year to submit paintings. The chosen painting is then purchased, with the rights to use it on any of their products for two years.
While George admits that he walks by proudly each time he sees his painting in the store, he denies that his shopping errands have increased!
* Local artists’ work is featured on the shopping bags of a retail group.
