THE Vesuvio Estate outside Paarl received another feather in its cap recently when its extra virgin olive oil won first prize at the annual international virgin olive oil competition in Italy.
This prestigious competition is held every year in Gradara with the olive oils of producers from across the globe competing for international recognition.
The Vesuvio Estate, situated in Agter Paarl, enters this competition every year.
In 2001 it won first prize in the “medium fruity” category securing the L’Orciolo D’Oro (The Golden Jar), whilst in 2004 they won first prize in the “light fruity” category.
Added to, that Vesuvio also received three distinctions (in 2000, 2002 and 2003).
This year Vesuvio submitted two entries, one of which secured the L’Orciolo D’Oro in the ‘medium fruity’ category while the other distinction is in the same category.
The farm is owned by Arturo Dotoli while Gert van Dyk is the manager. The previous oilmaker, Dr Carlo Castiglione, still advises them on a part-time basis.
