Businessmen attacked by robbers
2006-07-13
TWO businesses in Wellington fell victim to armed robbers during the past weekend.
The first incident occurred at 7:00 on Saturday morning, when the owner of Droomer’s Garage, John Droomer, unlocked his business’s door.
Droomer went to his office where he placed a metal box containing R13 000 on his desk.
He was suddenly apprehended by two men armed with a pistol, who demanded that he hand over the cash.
Later the same morning, Richie Jeursen of K Mark liquors, also in Main Street, was on his way to deposit money at a bank in Church Street.
He parked his vehicle in the parking area behind Wellington Spar but before he could get out of the car, he was attacked by a man wielding a knife.
He demanded that Jeursen hand over the cash but when he resisted a scuffle took place, during which Jeursen was stabbed in the forehead.
The robber grabbed a handful of cash out of the bank bag before fleeing.
A security guard in the vicinity heard a scream and rushed to the scene.
“I saw the robber fighting with the man in the vehicle, and I rushed to assist him.
“But the robber started running away and I chased him.
“Before I could grab him, a white Nissan Sentra with the registration number CZ 3483 stopped and picked him up. They then sped away,” said Oerson.
The robbers escaped with approximately R9000.
Jeursen was treated for the cut on his forehead as well as shock. The possibility that the two robberies are connected, is currently being investigated.
