FOUR Franschhoek restaurants and one from Paarl have received American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards.

They are Haute Cabrière and The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais as well as two new additions this year, namely, Grande Provence and Reuben’s. Also featured was Bosman’s of Paarl (Grande Roche Hotel).

The Western Cape region came out tops, with almost 50 percent of all national awards being made to restaurants in this region.

With close to 50 restaurants receiving awards across the country, the programme this year spans 16 urban and rural destinations across four of South Africa’s nine provinces.

Cape Town restaurants that shone are The Atlantic, Aubergine, Beluga, Blue Danube, Buitenverwachting, Bukhara, Catharina’s, Emily’s, Ginja, The Greenhouse and one.waterfront.

Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are towns that feature for the first time, with the selection of Zachary’s and Sand at the Plettenberg.

Other restaurants that have once again been reselected include The Première of Kleinmond, Jemima’s of Oudtshoorn, Fraai Uitzicht 1798 of Robertson and 96 Winery Road and L’Auberge du Paysan near Somerset West.

“This fine showing by restaurants in the Western Cape fairly reflects the fine culinary talent that is blossoming here and making the region a gastro-tourism destination,” says Victor Strugo, national selector for this programme since its inception in 1998 and a well-known food critic who reviews restaurants for a number of publications.

“Selection criteria for the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards include service, gastronomic, wine and overall excellence and consistency; geographical accessibility is also factored in. The awards include restaurants within a wide range of food and mood styles.
