A HORROR crash claimed the lives of two young women from Franschhoek, when the driver lost control of the vehicle they were travelling in, in the main street.

The incident occurred just before midnight on Monday night, when three young people were returning to Franschhoek.

The vehicle left the road shortly after the Franschhoek Garage and crashed into a wall of the La Cotte Wine Shop, before coming to a standstill on the other side of the road.

Jacqueline Hartzenberg (24) and Sanel Valentine (24) of Franschhoek were killed instantly.

They both worked at Träumerei coffee shop in the town as waitrons.
Employees of the coffee shop were too shocked by their colleagues’ deaths to talk to the Paarl Post.

The driver of the vehicle, Gino Price from Bellville, was taken to the Tygerberg Hospital with serious injuries.

* Early morning commuters on the Simondium Road were greeted by an awful sight on Saturday morning, when they came across the body of a young woman who had been thrown from her vehicle after a crash.

Natasha Meyerdricks (30), a three times South African kick-boxing champion and wellknown rescue-worker, was on the road between Franschhoek and Paarl when she lost control of her vehicle opposite the entrance to the Berg River Resort.

The car smashed into an electricity pole, after which Natasha’s body was flung from the wreckage.

Natasha, who worked at the Roeland Street fire department in Cape Town, was an avid rescue-worker and until recently was the only female rescue-diver in the Western Cape.

At the time of her death, Natasha had been involved in establishing a rescue service in Franschhoek.

* In another accident, a warden from Drakenstein Prison was killed shortly before 07:00 on Sunday morning on the Wemmershoek road between the N1 and Boschenmeer.

Coby Rhodes (56) died in thick mist when his car crashed into the side of the trailer of a large truck crossing the road ahead of him.

Rhodes, of 31 Kolbe Street, Paarl East, was on his way to work at the prison, where he had been working as a prison warden for the past 35 years. He was due to retire in three years.

Rhodes is survived by his wife Hester, son Vernon and daughter Sharon Lewis, as well as his father Willem, three brothers and two grandchildren.

* A two-year-old girl from Philippi, Nontsikelo Sobekwa, died in a crash on the N1 early on Monday when the tyre of a minibus taxi burst.
