THE University of Cape Town departments are keen to attract female learners into the built environment and are organising a programme where Grade 11 females from local schools will be selected to participate in a fun day at UCT.

There they will be exposed to various career options in the built environment.

Hundreds of events are to be hosted countrywide during the course of the year, culminating into a weeklong celebration of the industry during the week of 27 July to 3 August.

The learners will be divided into groups and will be given tasks to do which will include designing a house, costing the house, building houses with kits and looking at transport issues. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

National Construction Week is an initiative of the Department of Public Works, implemented in conjunction with government infrastructure departments, public entities, local authorities, academic institutions and the private sector.

This nation-wide awareness campaign aims to promote the image and profile of the construction sector in order to give the South African youth the opportunity to experience a wide range of exciting opportunities available in the built environment and construction sector.

Any business, academic institution or school wishing to participate in National Construction Week, can log onto www.ncw06. org.za and follow the event or school registration guidelines. Alternatively, phone 0860 000 629 for more info.
