THE u.21 soccer team of Desmond Tutu Secondary School lost in the final of the Kay Motsepe Cup, but nevertheless came away with a sizeable cheque.

The Paarl team lost 2-0 to Empucukweni in the final, but picked up a silver medal and winnings of R150 000.

DMT qualified for the national finals of the third Kay Motsepe Cup, after they were crowned the Western Cape champions.

It is the third year the Kay Motsepe Cup was presented - a national soccer tournament which saw 6000 high schools taking part in the preliminary rounds.

At the national finals which were played in Boipatong last weekend, the top nine schools faced each other in a double round robin system.

The teams of Desmond Tutu, Kakamas, Johannesburg, Boikagong (Rustenburg), Harmony (Welkom), MJ Academy (Thohoyandou), Empucukweni (Witbank), Sekusile (Newcastle) and Mfesane (Port Elizabeth) were divided into three pools of three teams each.

During these group matches Desmond Tutu drew 1-1 against Boikagong, beat Mfesane 3-0, beat Boikagong 3-1 and again dominated Mfesane 5-1.

It is the third year that Desmond Tutu has competed in this competition.
