Artists offering their hands
2006-07-27
ON 1 September some 25 artists are offering their hands to be auctioned to help establish a skills training centre for abused women and children.
The artists are taking part in the Give Us A Hand exhibition at Waterpoel entertainment venue, in aid of the Athlone House of Strength (Ahos), a non-profit organisation in Paarl, which is developing a one stop empowerment centre for abused women and their children.
Fiona Brophy, centre manager for Ahos, says: “The skills training programme that we seek help for will be vital in equipping these women so that they can realise their dreams and become self- sustaining and no longer victims of abuse.
“Women coming to Ahos enter into a partnership. We offer comprehensive services that enable them to help themselves and the benefits are also felt by their children, their families and the community as a whole.
“The centre would accommodate 20 women at a time and offer training such as basic computer skills, sewing, baking and various crafts such as beading and fabric painting.”
The public and also corporates are urged to attend the auction in order to obtain a once-off item created with a specific end goal in mind.
