Cultivaria: Paarl's biggest fest ever

AT a time when every small town is fighting to become a blip on the festival radar, Paarl (traditionally associated with fine wines, tradition and culture) has refreshingly broken the mould by becoming home to the Cultivaria festival.
This dynamic new event on the Cape social calendar, promises a fusion of pleasure, culture and adventure like never before seen in this country.
This spectacular event falls on the long weekend of 21 to 25 September and is a unique opportunity for guests to enjoy a variety of memorable events, feeding the mind, body and soul.
Cultivaria will fire-up with a pop concert at Gymnasium High and a gourmet feast at the longest dinner table in the world on Thursday evening 21 September.
This table will be in the Main Street, with delightful guests such as Shalene Surtie-Richards joining in.
The Friday is filled with concerts with artists such as Laurika Rauch and Anna Davel, all the way to Mel Botes, Chris Chameleon, Dozi and Mathys Roets.
The Jonny Cooper Big Band will perform in the town hall, while Leon Ecroignard stars in “Man” at La Rochelle Primary.
The Cape Town Ballet will perform “Swing Time at the Ballet” at the FNB hall (BHS).
At 20:30 the historic film “Hunchback of Notre Dame” will be screened at the Toringkerk, together with improvised organ accompaniment by Zorada Temmingh.
Revive the glory of the Bee Gees in “Bee Gees Immortality”, with Paul Buckby, Mark Richardson and Luciano Zuppa.
The Saturday is crammed full of productions. Marga van Rooy portrays author Dot Serfontein, who speaks about the Free State like only the mother of Antjie Krog can (in Gymnasium’s Ouditorium). Marion Holm explains “Braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies en... Sussie” and in the lighthearted play Art of Charf, Elize Cawood and Wilson Dunster take the spotlight.
Pedro Kruger, Marion Holm and Schalk van der Merwe perform in the bittersweet “Die Tafel”, while Nhanhla Mavundla stars in “A Man and his Dog”.
Also on stage that day are the likes of Kevin Leo, Coenie de Villiers and Theuns Jordaan on different stages, while Joseph Clarke becomes Freddie Mercury in “Queen”, performed with a live band at Gymnasium.
Egoli stars such as Brumilda van Rensburg and Hannes van Wyk will be giving aspiring actors a few tips in a youth workshop, while Wolfgang Riebe will work his magic at the police college.
The Garden & Home Sundowner on Seidelberg begins at 18:00, with Paul Buckby as guest artist and a diamond jewellery piece as prize.
On the Sunday, the Mozart Requiem is performed in the town hall in memory of the tenor Deon van der Walt, by the Tygerberg City Choir and Canticum Novum with the US Symphony orchestra under the baton of Louis van der Watt.
Various artists will be performing in Lyf (Pedro Kruger), Tydloos (Jannie Moolman, André Schwarts, Rina Hugo and Arina de Witt), Pleiboiz and the comedy “Two to Tango” (Bo Petersen and Bruce Young).
During the Rooi Rose Christmas Concert starring a number of well-known singers, a DVD will be recorded.
On Sunday evening the Cultivaria Gospel Show will start at 19:00 at the police college. The line-up includes stars such as Jan de Wet, Freda Francis, Johan Els, and Annelise Wiid.
On Heritage Day, highlight are concerts by DNA Strings and David Kramer. There will also be a Rooi Rose readers’ breakfast at La Rochelle.
