THE Fairview Cheese and Wine Estate recently launched an art competition in conjunction with Bergendal Primary School in Agter Paarl, to inspire young artists and simultaneously raise funds for the school’s music programme.
Artwork from the talented youngsters will be on view and for sale in the Fairview tasting room in August.
More than 180 children from the school took part in the competition after they enjoyed an educational field trip to Fairview for inspiration.
During their visit, the kids had the opportunity to taste some of Fairview’s award-winning cheeses, feed the resident herd of goats and tour the wine cellar.
According to Bergendal principal Nabilah Abrahams, the Fairview art competition was a great way of incorporating art, social sciences and geography into their curriculum.
“We were absolutely delighted when Fairview approached us with this novel concept. This was such a fantastic creative initiative and we really appreciate their efforts to involve youth from the surrounding communities. I’m convinced that this will definitely inspire our young and upcoming artists.”
The response from the children was enthusiastic and the teachers had been amazed by the quality and creative interpretations on the theme.
“It was also a great opportunity for them to be exposed to one of the key tourist attractions right on their doorstep.
“These kids don’t have many chances to explore their musical or creative talents and we hope that the proceeds of the paintings will assist us in starting a music department at the school,” she said.
The judging of the competition is open to members of the public and visitors to the tasting room and Goatshed eatery.
A voting box will be placed in the tasting area, where guests can cast their ballots for their favourite artists.
The winners of the various age categories will be spoilt with a fun-filled day including a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.
Donations of musical instruments are welcome and can be handed to the staff in the tasting area to help the school kick-start their musical department.
A firm supporter of community involvement, Charles Back said that they felt it very important to forge relationships with the local community and to involve and support the younger generation.
“Selected works of art will be incorporated in our newly renovated tasting facility and I would personally like to invite members of the public to view and purchase these amazing paintings.”
