Building wages rise 8%
2006-07-27
THE Bargaining Council for the Building Industry (Cape of Good Hope) announced that their annual wage negotiations were concluded on Tuesday, approving a wage increase of 8% on the basis of cost to the employer, from 1 November.
The agreement was reached by Master Builders and Allied Trades Association (Western Cape) and the Boland Master Builders and Allied Trades Association, on behalf of the employers, and the Building Workers’ Union, the South African Woodworkers’ Union, the National Union of Mineworkers, the Building, Wood & Allied Workers’ Union of South Africa and the Building Construction and Allied Workers’ Union of SA, on behalf of the workers.
The new basic hourly rates applicable from 1 November in the Boland are artisans R27,44; general worker R12,28 and labourer/cleaner R7,89.
The social benefits such as pension/provident fund, sick pay fund and medical aid contributions will also be increased proportionately.
The early announcement of the new wage structure will enable employers to effect changes to their wages systems timeously and also help employers in their costing processes into the immediate future.
The amicable conclusion of the negotiating process is also considered a feather in the cap for the collective bargaining system which is in place at Bargaining Councils.
To this end it is of vital importance that virtually all employers and employees should become members of one of the parties to the Councils.
It is a system that should seriously be considered by industries that are experiencing difficulties in levelling the playing fields for all those engaged in such an industy.
