Spectacular new mountain bike challenge for Stellenbosch

Spectacular new mountain bike challenge for Stellenbosch

2006-08-03

THE country’s premier wine festival, the popular Stellenbosch Wine Festival, has decided to add a little sporting touch to its already exciting line-up this year.

The Stellenbosch Mountain-Bike Challenge takes place on Saturday and will start and finish at the Paul Roos Gymnasium grounds.

Three distances (60km, 30km and 15km) will cater for various levels of riders - from the kids, novices to intermediate riders and a longer route will also challenge the more advanced riders to their limit.

Mountain-bikers can look forward to the unique opportunity to ride through the vineyards of several famous wine estates of the region and the winter weather should add a bit more adventure to the varied terrain.

Course designer Meurant Botha from Dirtopia is keeping the exact details of the routes a secret until race day.

Meurant, who has been building and maintaining trails for more than eight years, has also been responsible for mountain-bike routes like the ever popular Cape Argus Pick ’n Pay Mountain-Bike Challenge held at Boschendal every year.

He recently returned from Canada where he attended the International MTB Conference and trail building courses, so expect some surprises en route.

Riders will not be disappointed with the routes and the scenery will be spectacular.

To enter or for more information visit www.mtb challenge.co.za or contact the Dirtopia Trail Centre (884-4752) or email theteam@dirtopia.co.za. Late entries will be accepted at registration from 07:00 on racing day.
