School gets own darkroom
2006-08-10
VISITORS from America popped in at Amstelhof Primary recently, not to pay a cordial visit, but to help the school in establishing their own photographic darkroom.
"I think this is a first for primary schools in our region,” says principal Claude de Jager.
The photographic darkroom already boasts four enlargers, 40 cameras and other darkroom equipment.
“This will bring photography to the children as a means of exploring their own story which they have to tell.
"It will improve their literacy skills through writing and will help them in their maths and science curriculum,” says programme director Chris Cearnal.
Teachers will facilitate the process.
The project came into being as part of the South African Initiative Program of the Rutgers University in New Brunswick (New Jersey), after representatives of the Graduate School of Education visited local schools last year.
They then acted as facilitators between the Greater Brunswick Charter School and Amstelhof, which now profits from this union.
