Acclaimed musicians at Nederburg
2006-08-17
INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed Ukrainian cellist, Natalia Khoma, makes her South African debut at the second concert of the Nederburg Concert Series on Sunday 20 August in Paarl at 17:00.
She will be accompanied by pianist Volodymyr Vynnytsky, a fellow Ukrainian and a soloist in his own right.
They will perform Franck’s Sonata in A Major and Rachmaninov’s Sonata in G minor, Opus 19, as well as Vynnytsky’s own composition for cello and piano, Lost Tango.
A child prodigy, Khoma made her first appearance on TV at the tender age of 10 and went on to perform her first concerto with an orchestra at age 13.
Her playing has been hailed by critics as “technically dazzling”, “full of vitality, fluency and virtuosity”, and as having “tremendous fire and passion”.
For the last decade and a half Khoma has performed as a soloist all over the world. After winning the All-Ukrainian competition in 1981, she added a string of prestigious awards to her name during the 1980s, including top prizes at the Budapest Pablo Casals Competition and the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.
In addition to her performing career, Khoma is on the faculty of Michigan State University.
Pianist Vynnytsky has performed as soloist for many well-known orchestras in Europe and the United States and has played at the Carnegie Hall, the Steinway Hall, the Great Hall at the Bolshoi and the Theatre Champs d’Elysees.
He has earned a reputation as a brilliant chamber music performer and has appeared throughout the world with acclaimed quartets such as the St Petersburg String Quartet.
He is currently music director of the Music and Art Centre of Greene County, New York.
It is organised and funded by Distell and is one of the ways it supports the arts - providing a platform for both established and new talent.
Tickets for the Khoma and Vynnytsky concert are R125 and include a finger supper served with fine Nederburg wines.
Bookings for all concerts can be made by calling Irma on 809-8106, Magdel on 809-8345, or by emailing ialbers@distell.co.za.
