Pizza boys save the day

A heroic chase by employees of a local pizza parlour ensured the capture of three men who had robbed a youngster of a cellphone.
The incident took place on Saturday evening at 20:00 when a group of teenage boys were outside McDonald’s on their bicycles.
A boy had his phone to his ear, when he was approached by three men. One of the men suddenly grabbed the phone from his hand and the three then fled.
Meanwhile Henk Jakobs and Nico Jonck of St Elmo’s were busy baking pizzas across the road from McDonalds, when they heard shouting in the road.
“When we saw the men running away, we just knew that someone had been robbed,” said Nico.
“Without hesitation Henk and I, and one of our drivers, Dieter Brand, hit the road and pursued the men.”
The men ran up Mill Street and various other passersby joined the chase.
“We eventually caught up to the robbers behind Gymnasium Primary and held them captive until the police arrived on the scene,” said Henk.
“It looks like we are slightly fitter than what they are.”
While they were waiting for the police, one of the men produced a knife and started threatening them, but Nico was able to knock the knife out of his hand.
The cellphone was found lying in the gutter near the spot where the men had been captured.
Khwezi Sibzamba (22) and two juveniles were taken into custody.
* In the early hours of Sunday morning, a woman in Du Toit Street was awoken by the sound of breaking glass.
On further investigation she found that a young man had broken into her car. When he saw her he ran away. She immediately phoned the police and they were on the scene within minutes.
A sixteen-year-old boy was arrested not far from the victim’s home.
He had the car radio in his possession, as well as goods that had been stolen out of other vehicles. He had left a pair of gloves in the vehicle.
After further investigation the youngster has now been connected to seven other cases of theft from motor vehicles.
A spokesperson for the police said that there has recently been a spate of such thefts in Paarl, which will now hopefully subside after this arrest.
He warned people not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to ensure that their cars are always locked.
