Paarl Soccer hits slump
2006-08-17
THIS past week saw Paarl Soccer Club struggling against the teams of Glen Eagles and Mighty Peace.
Paarl travelled to Cloetesville last Wednesday to take on Glen Eagles in a Castle League fixture.
Paarl, desperate for Castle League honours, started the game at a lively pace with the possession honours shared evenly between the two teams.
This led to flowing football and hard tackling, while the crowd participated in the flow of the match.
The visitors were a constant threat on the attack, thanks to their pace and youthful exuberance. They drew first blood when their left half scored from an acute angle to hit the ball in the roof of the net.
Paarl conceded two further goals when they decided to push more players into attacking positions.
After the interval, Paarl annihilated the threat on the left and started to dominate proceedings.
Charlon Kerspuy pulled one back from the visitors when he scored in the 68th minute. Thereafter, Sivuyile Manyonga hit the woodwork and had a header just shaving the upright.
Glen Eagles got their fourth goal after a blunder by goalkeeper Shamir Davids making the score 4-1.
On Saturday Paarl clashed with Mighty Peace in Kayamandi.
Within the first five minutes of play, Paarl forced three saves from the home goalkeeper, but did not convert the chances that came their way.
Later in the half, Sivuyile Manyonga pounced on an error made by the goalkeeper and played the ball to Leroy Prins who found the back of the net.
A loss of concentration by the Paarl goalkeeper allowed the home team a corner and the ensuing scuffle in the box resulted in the equaliser.
Minutes later they scored their second goal after converting defence into attack and catching the Paarl defenders napping.
In the second half, Paarl got a penalty after Sivuyile Manyonga’s pace forced their defender to bring him down in the box. Anthony Chapman converted the opportunity and levelled the score at 2-2.
The home team, however, struck twice more giving them the vicotry 4-2.
