Robbers floored
2006-08-24
A HUGE gun-battle took place in the streets of Wellington yesterday afternoon, after a botched cash-in-transit robbery at the Pick ’n Pay shopping centre.
Six would-be robbers parked a getaway car in Voor Street at approximately 12:00 and then proceeded to the entrance of Pick ’n Pay, where a Coin Security vehicle was delivering money.
The armed men attacked the security guards and robbed them of an unknown amount of money.
They then escaped through the supermarket and went up the steps of the side entrance at Voor Street, where the getaway car was parked.
As they arrived at the vehicle, a task force from Cape Town who had been staking out the building after having received information about a possible robbery, tried to apprehend the suspects.
When the men attempted to flee in the white Mazda with CY registration, they lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of Voor and Main Street, crashing into a road sign.
The suspects opened fire at members of the task force, who retaliated.
Three of the robbers were wounded and were forced to surrender. The policemen were unscathed.
Four men were arrested in connection with the robbery, while two managed to escape the scene.
An extensive man-hunt has been launched to trace the fugitives. It is suspected that all the men are from the Cape Town area.
