Survey of heritage resources

Survey of heritage resources

2005-04-21

THE Drakenstein Municipality has embarked on a survey of heritage resources within the municipal area as required in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act.

Following a tender proposal call, a team of heritage consultants has been appointed by the municipality to undertake an eight month study programme.

During the course of the next eight months a heritage survey team will be undertaking a field inspection of potential heritage resources in the municipal area including structures older than 60 years.

In order to establish whether a property has heritage significance, members of the public are requested to provide the survey team access to their property.

The study involves:

* The identification of heritage resources defined in the NHR Act including places of cultural significance, places associated with a particular community or cultural grouping for social, cultural or spiritual reasons, sites related to the history of slavery, archaeological and palaeontological sites, historical settlement or townscapes, historical farm werfs, landscape and natural features of cultural significance, geological sites or scientific or cultural importance, graves and burial grounds.

* The grading of heritage resources for national, provincial and local significance respectively.

* The establishment of a heritage database as an effective tool for the local authority to manage heritage resources within its area of jurisdiction.

* The preparation of a heritage management framework including the formulation of an overarching heritage policy for the Drakenstein Municipality, the submission of a list of proposed Grade 1 and 2 heritage resources to the South Africa Heritage Resources Agency and Heritage Western Cape respectively, and the submission of a list of Grade 3 heritage resources for entry onto the provincial register.

The study programme will include public consultation in the form of a series of open house meetings which will be advertised.

All interested & Affected Parties (I&APs) including all heritage and ratepayers organisations are invited to register their stakeholder status and/or interest in the Drakenstein Heritage Survey.

Registration will ensure that you or your organisation is kept informed of the progress of the heritage survey, is invited to attend and participate in the series of public meetingsand is invited to comment on any draft findings and recommendations.
