Province helps crime fighters
2005-04-21
THE Provincial MEC for Community Safety and Security, Leonard Ramatlakane, recently visited the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) and the local municipalities within its boundaries to strengthen co-operation in fighting crime.
Ramatlakane challenged Winelands District Municipality, including their local municipalities, to agree to a Rand on Rand agreement with the Department of Community Safety. The Minister is donating R200 000 towards speeding up the establishment of Community Safety Forums.
This is part of a programme to build an active crime resisting community with special emphasis on youth and women within the next five years.
He said that to achieve this partnerships and relationships between Government and the Community should be built to help raise the consciousness against crime.
Ramatlakane said that his visit was also about cementing intergovernmental relations in crime prevention.
Mayors Johnson of Cape Winelands, Sibeko of Breede Valley and Schuurman of Witzenberg pledged their municipalities’ support to working with the Minister.
Mayor Johnson in accepting the cheque for R200 000 said that it is vital for citizens to participate in community safety matters when the district needed to decide on implementing the project and that meetings would be called with all Community Police Forums soon.
He also encouraged councillors and officials to do at least two hours per week voluntary service in the Bambanani programme. He assured Minister Ramatlakane of continued funding and assistance to neighbourhood organisations.
